Apprenticeships

Are you an early career artist who loves queer theatre, comedy, camp, and drag? Great news! The Out Front Theatre Company Apprenticeship is officially launching in 2026 to help you bridge the gap to professional theatre. Join our company for a paid, year-long experience that prepares you for a theatre career in Atlanta and beyond (and maybe even how to walk in heels or decorate a pride float!)

We are hiring 4 Acting Apprentices and 2 Directing/Stage Management Apprentices for our inaugural company.

Expectations:

  • An average of 20 hours a week working at the theatre. Some weeks more, some weeks less.
  • Acting apprentices should expect to receive understudy assignments for all mainstage productions but will be considered for casting in the principal company of all productions.
  • Directing/Stage Management apprentices should expect to receive either AD or ASM assignments for each mainstage production.
  • All apprentices will also be offered additional front of house or production opportunities for rentals and/or special events, such as drag shows, cabarets, etc.
  • Participation in monthly private teaching and industry workshops.
  • Networking opportunities with ATL based artists in theatre, film, and television, and opportunities to connect with artists outside of ATL.
  • Guaranteed professional resume credit working on Out Front productions.
  • Arts admin opportunities working directly with Out Front staff.
FAQs

No – this commitment is designed to average 20 hours a week during weekends and evenings so apprentices can maintain full time work as needed.

Unfortunately, no. All applicants must have access to or be prepared to secure local housing.

Generally, no, but smaller events like readings, cabarets, industrial shoots, etc. may be approved on a case-by-case basis, but due to the rehearsal schedule, casting for full productions outside of Out Front cannot be accommodated.

August 31, 2026 to June 30, 2027.

Yes!

Acting apprentices are paid a weekly rate for rehearsals and if asked to perform, apprentices will be compensated per performance. Acting apprentices who understudy can also expect to be assigned at least two Front-of-House shifts per week of the production. Directing/Stage Management will be paid a weekly rate for rehearsal & production weeks (ADs are expected to serve as run crew for productions as needed). Typical weekly rates for these assignments are $175.

If apprentices have the requisite production skills, they may also be hired for set build/painting/light hang/costume construction per their interest. These responsibilities are not required but encouraged!

All apprentices will also be offered additional paid front-of-house or production opportunities for rentals and/or special events, such as drag shows, cabarets, etc.

All actors should prepare a 90 second audition package of their choosing. If you sing, we’d encourage a 16 to 32 bar cut of music and a 60 second monologue. Given our programming, we really encourage you to showcase your comedic side but encourage you to prepare whatever you feel best suits you (except Shakespeare. We love him, but don’t really produce his work here, so no classics please!) Also, be ready to share your favorite celebrity impression (because it’s fun!)

Those in the stage management/directing track should be prepared to share some examples of your work either in a physical or digital portfolio (directors note, SM books, script analysis, etc. These can be for either realized or conceptualized productions.)

All applicants should be prepared to also share a copy of their resume.

We want to serve as a home and safe space for early career artists to develop and learn. If you’re interested in an opportunity to develop connections with other likeminded artists as you begin your career, we think this is a great opportunity for you! And if you like camp, comedy, drag and the like, you’ve really come to the right place!

No – we support all artists who support our mission. Your identity is your business, but our mission is to tell LGBTQIA+ stories, and we invite any and all who want to be a part of that to join us!
